Recent Events
October 2002
Oct 1 - Regular Meeting and Training
- Recent Events and Issues,
- Alzheimer’s presentation by Jean Daly
Oct 4-6th – Track-Aware Course
- Two Trackers from PRSAR traveled to Saltspring Island. Kevin Laycraft and ShelbyGosjborn participated in the annual tracking weekend. As Team Leaders, they worked with several novice trackers in learning these detailed and essential skills.
Oct 8th - Rope Team Training night
- Members of the PR Rope Team reviewed and practiced vertical decent and ascent skills.
Oct 19th - Rope Team Training day
- Several members of the PR Rope Team spent the day studying rope rescue skills. With a focus on scenarios and systems, the members worked out the details of a typical rope rescue operation. The new standards of the new Rope Rescue Manual were reviewed and practiced.
Oct 22nd - Rope Team Training night
- Reviewed basic knots and systems.
- Discussed future plans and needs.
Oct 25-27th - Rope Rescue Team Evaluation Weekend:
- Five members of the PR Rope Rescue Team joined many Rope Rescue Teams in Port Alberni for a weekend of Rope Team Member Evaluations. While this weekend is focused on evaluating many people for Rope Rescue Team Member status, is an excellent opportunity for people new to PEP rope rescue to see and work with experienced rope rescue teams on Vancouver Island. Powell River has limited training opportunities.
- Congratulations to Gord Likar, Colin Dionne and Doug Logan. All three have successfully achieved Rope Rescue Team Member status. This is huge step towards building a Rope Rescue Team in Powell River. There is a vast area of extremely rugged country in the Powell River area.
Oct 30th - Lost Mushroom Picker
- PRSAR was called out just after nidnight for a missing man at 11 mile on the main logging road. Several PRSAR members were responding to the last known point, when contact was made with family members by radio. The subject had been found, and they were on their way out. The subject was assisted out of the bush by friends with flashlights.

** Current Events **
Dog Team Evaluation Sessions
It is hoped that sometime this coming month, 3 dog teams can be re-certified. Powell River has one of the strongest Dog Teams in B.C. We continue to set the standard for dog teams in this province.
PRSAR Website
Work still continues on building our website. StraitTalk Computing has built the basic website and will be adding text and information as it is written.
Our email address is
prsar@hotmail.comWhen we have the working site operational, we will publish the link, but it will still be 'under construction'.
2003 Municipal Budget
PRSAR has put a few items into the meager 2003 Municipal budget. Among other things, we have asked for rope rescue equipment to supply four more rope rescue team members. This will equip eight rope rescue people, which is the minimum for a team to attempt an operation.
Mobile Command Post
PRSAR is getting quotes on trailers to be made into a mobile command post. With practically every search, we have had communication problems. Especially out of remote locations to base. With a mobile base, we can greatly improve communications, and cut travel time to the location.
